Explain a quote rounding difference with AI and decimal arithmetic
Trace precision, rounding stage and currency rules before changing a small discrepancy between quote totals.
A one-cent difference can come from the calculation method rather than the price.
Editorial workflow guide · AI-assisted preparation · Not a hands-on product test. How we work
Capture the rule at every calculation stage
Collect the approved quantity, unit price, discount method, currency, displayed precision and the relevant billing preview. Ask the commercial owner whether rounding happens per unit, per line or after summing the document. Include the chosen tie-breaking rule rather than assuming all systems round a half-cent the same way.
Use AI to identify the likely point of divergence and draft an explanation, then use a decimal calculator or spreadsheet with an explicitly reviewed rounding function. Do not compare a displayed two-decimal price with a hidden higher-precision value without noting the difference. Small totals still need reproducible formulas.

Work a one-cent boundary
In a fictional USD example, three separate lines each have an unrounded amount of $0.335. Using half-up rounding to two decimals on each line produces $0.34 per line and a $1.02 sum. Summing the unrounded amounts first produces $1.005, which becomes $1.01 under that same rule. Both computations follow their stated rounding stage.
The difference is $0.01. The review should record the two methods and ask which one the approved quoting process uses. It should not alter the unit price to force agreement. This deliberately small example isolates the issue; it does not imply that any named product applies these specific rules or prices.
Check currency and platform configuration separately
Microsoft’s Business Central documentation distinguishes invoice rounding from unit-amount and amount rounding, and describes a separate rounding adjustment line when invoice rounding is used. That is evidence that configuration matters, not a reason to copy its settings into another quoting system.
Stripe’s currency documentation also distinguishes minor-unit representations and currency-specific exceptions. Do not assume every currency has two decimal places or that a payment API expects the displayed decimal number. Keep taxes, exchange rates and processor fees out of the simple rounding comparison until the appropriate owner confirms how they apply. This guide does not determine tax treatment or recommend ledger changes.
Return a transparent discrepancy record
Use rows for source line, exact input, intermediate result, rounding rule, rounded result and total contribution. Add a document-level reconciliation showing the remaining difference and any approved adjustment. Preserve the original quote and the reviewer’s decision rather than hiding a correction inside an AI-generated paragraph.
Test a quantity of one, a boundary value, a negative adjustment and a currency with different precision under your approved rules. Report unsupported cases for review. This is a proposed arithmetic-checking workflow, not a tested connector. A useful explanation lets the buyer and finance reproduce the same result without accepting the model’s calculation on trust.
A prompt to adapt
Trace these quote totals using the supplied decimal inputs, currency precision, rounding stage and rounding rule. Show per-line and document-level formulas and isolate differences. Ask when a rule is unspecified. Do not change prices, tax settings, ledger accounts or payment requests; prepare an explanation for review.
